It looks midly bemused to be a car.

Let’s bring the numbered Renaults back!

As a start they should introduce a modern 4, and rename the Twingo GT to 5 Turbo:

See it’s somewhat similar.

Very nice. Just needs smaller wheels and a narrower track.

Goddam it, if we got the current Twingo in the US, I’d have one right now. I don’t care if was badged as a Smart or a Nissan, I’d take it.

The seating position is a bit too Smart like for my taste (as a Twingo 2 owner), but I agree that it looks great. I never get why the US does get the Smart, but then the next smallest car available is Fiesta sized, why not occupy that gap?

If Renault/Nissan/Smart would bring the LWB smart platform to the US I’m sure it could sell quite well, it would be a more practical alternative to a Fiat 500, seeing both are somewhat fancy small cars.

I would genuinely buy one of those.

Its the cost of putting it through US federal crash testing, plus whatever USDOT-specific design/equipment changes would be needed. Daimler AG estimates that launching the ForFour here would double Smart brand sales, but that would only mean about 15,000 more cars a year, which is just not enough to be worth it to them.

I get that is the reason they didn’t bring the previous Mitsubishi Colt based Forfour over, but wouldn’t it be cheaper/easier this time around since it is basically an LWB fortwo?

I have no doubt it would be pretty easy, if they wanted to do it, but the certification process would still be in the millions and Daimler just doesn’t want to bother. The whole Smart division has been operating in the red here since it launched, they sell the ForTwo to balance out Mercedes-Benz’s model line for CAFE requirements and don’t care too much about it losing money, as long as the losses are manageable/can be absorbed by the rest of the company.

In that case it indeed makes sense to only have the forfour, otherwise they’d just be suffering more of a loss. I knew Smart isn’t a big seller in the US (it isn’t in Europe either, I often go days without seeing one), but I didn’t know they were mainly there to polish up CAFE stats.

On the surface, it seems more logical. But, Daimler North America seems to regard the ForTwo as more important for the brand’s identity. I guess they think the ForFour will be seen as just another 4-door small car, whereas the ForTwo is unique in being a two seater wheeled phone booth. The ForTwo has a small but somewhat fanatical following and no real direct competition. The ForFour would be more appealing to more people, but would also have to face off against other city cars like the Chevrolet Spark and Mitsubishi Mirage, it wouldn’t have a category all to itself and would require more money and marketing support to maintain the same sales volume as the ForTwo.

Yeah, your right, the fortwo is unique in it’s kind, unlike the forfour.

(Also I just saw I typed forfour in my previous reply, I meant to say that only having the fortwo makes sense)
